THE DEVICE

As part of my final major project in my 3rd year of university we were given the task of budling a device which could record data at the location of the building we were redesigning, our given building was an old Armoury building located in Chatham dockyard.

The Device was made up of three trays, each with a thin layer of sand and a different size marble in each each tray. The trays rest on a styrofoam base with supports allowing the device to float on the river. On the top part of The Device has a handle, allowing it to be held as ease, it also has a phone tray to allow the data to be recorded in action, along side this there is a thin rope attachment allowing The Device to be controlled when floating in the river.

THE DATA

The above shows some of the data recorded using the device. As The Device was used, either walked around the site of floated on the water, the marbles would move through the sand creating patterns, the above shows the patterns from the three trays, each way The Device was used created a different outcome. This data will be used to influence further parts of my interior design project in the Armoury , potentially influencing circulation paths or seating layouts.

Below shows The Device in use.
